With more big box stores in the United States each year cranking out photographs and wall decor in mass, the independent artist is facing more challenges than ever. Competition floods the market as artists fight over the shrinking attention spans of audiences. This is especially true in the music industry, where new software allows practically anyone with a computer to create and distribute their own songs. Starving artists, the dreamers in our local community, need our help and support now more than ever. Take, for example, our friend Nick, whose tireless efforts reward him with a life surrounded by that which he loves: music. Unfortunately, he is literally surrounded. Deciding to get organized, Nick enlisted our help to arrange his room so that he could focus on creating music instead of drowning in it. Nick needed something that would support a lot of weight and accommodate his specific dimensional needs. One unique thing that he did, something we thought was pretty ingenious, was to create his own cantilevered rack.
By extending a wire shelf from the posts of an existing unit, our featured musician created additional shelf space that would host his laptop. As an independent artist, Nick relies on his home studio to create and master originals works. That means his equipment is his livelihood, and we’re honored that he trusted the quality of our Shelving Inc (SI) Brand Wire Shelving with his set up. Without community support, artists cannot succeed. Without shelf support, that laptop would come crashing down… We’re proud to keep that equipment safe with the guaranteed strength and durability of our wire racks. The next time you see a poster for a local concert, take a second and think about all of the work that goes into that performance. Think about all of the people that have helped that show come to be, who believed in the dream that the entertainer wishes to share with the audience. Think about how you can help make a difference to a local artist, and how they might affect your life. And remember the “community” aspect of the art community.

If you are a small business owner, you know the difficulty of marketing with a small budget. Well, Shelving.com is here to help you organize your business with three helpful tips on how to reconsider your marketing mix and try to make the most of the money you’ve got. It’s not enough just to advertise, you have to organize your store, get people in there, make sure they buy, and keep them coming back. 1) The Amnesia Experiment Nobody knows more about your business than you. It began as a startup in your garage and then you used your rockstar entreprenuer powers to expand to a storefront. After all that work, you’ve become biased against your store. Take a step back, forget about all the time and energy that you put into it, and walk through the store like a customer. Suffer from a brief bout of amnesia and look around with unbiased eyes. Question the structure of the shop from a customer perspective: Is it easy to navigate? Are sections clearly labeled to guide you through the buying process? Can you get all of the information you need to make a purchasing decision? Once you have walked through the front door as a stranger, you will be able to see how to improve the organization of your business. 2) Small is Smart You’ve got your store ready for the browsing, but nobody is walking through the front door. Rather than call on the mystic powers of Super Bowl advertising, turn local and get creative. Whether your company is online or brick and mortar, you have to live somewhere! One of the greatest things about your small business is that you started it in your town. Get involved in your community, sponsor an event, host a dinner, create a t-shirt to hand out at a parade, buy some chalk and pay a couple of high school art students to create a really unique mural. Start the conversation on a personal level; generate a buzz about your business by getting involved. 3) Show them the Goods Capitalize on the buzz about town by offering specific deals to your welcomed guests. Make special items and sales apparent to your customers by drawing attention to them in a separate display. Handwritten signs (or hand drawn jpegs) are a great way to hit all three tips: provide useful direction, keep it personal, and call out a special deal. Organize these displays on end caps or in larger areas with wire shelving racks. One of our local customers used our wire racks to create great display shelves and loved it. Since pulling the product off the shelves and putting it on a display, the store has seen an increase in sales volume for that style of lubricant. Marketing for your small business doesn’t have to cost a ton of money. You can grow your business with a small budget by cleaning up the store navigation, getting personally involved with the community, and putting your products on display. The largest investment you can make in your business is your time. To convolute a few adages: if time is money, and it takes money to make money, then it takes time to make money. Spend your time making more money.

While times may be tough for Detroit, there remains an elegance to the classic style of a major city. From the wonderful architecture to the bustle of life, our city enjoys vibrant outlets of hope even in the darkest corners. Novels have been written on this theme, where industrial gloom has given way to the shining beauty of one plant. For this glimpse of poetry, we have a loyal customer to thank. The cold cityscape in the distance contrasts the vibrant green flora evenly spaced on our three shelf corner unit. Wire racking, while in itself not the most natural place for plants, is entirely transformed by the triangle shelf liners that add aesthetic depth to the plane. We have a wide variety of sizes, colors, and shapes to fit your space. Come see our selection of plastic inserts for chrome wire shelves, and instill your cityscape with a touch of stylish and functional decor.

Would you reinvent the wheel if you could? Maybe if you find a new way of looking at them. We are lucky enough to know one innovator who did exactly that: who invented a new use for his wheels. Rather than rely on a caster to transport his goods, he took another look at that wheel and asked, “How can I make this better?” By crossing his own set of wheels with our SI brand chrome wire shelving, one of our customers was able to create a mobile storage solution that effectively organized his means of transportation. Installing a wire rack in the back of his vehicle, this revolutionary businessman changed his company vehicle into a mobile service station for IT repair. Organization is king, and this shelf is the workhorse that carries the burden of his heavy rule. You can see the use of Wire Ledges, Shelf Dividers, and Plastic Bins all at work in changing this van into a great transport vehicle. By imagining the wheel as a simple caster, the idea to create a business on wheels was born. Simply by adding some storage racks into the back of his vehicle, this IT innovator could organize his equipment and expand his territory.
Think of what you can do if you use a little ingenuity and re-imagine an existing product. Creativity will get you far in this world, but a set of wheels will get you there faster. For anyone with a home business, consider detailing your car in chrome.

Shelving, Inc. is very proud to announce receiving a commendation for outstanding customer service as an online retailer. Unlike many awards in our social-media saturated society, this was not a prize based on popularity. We have earned this recognition after being evaluated on over 350 metrics from the ordering process to shipping products timely, all the while keeping our customers informed of their order status, answering questions and overcoming obstacles when necessary. For this, and many more reasons, we have been awarded the STELLA Service Seal of Excellence. Not just a pun on stellar service, STELLA Service is a brand that is rapidly growing in an effort to create transparency for customers that shop online. It is an independent evaluating agency that researches how businesses operate from customer to customer. By posing as an anonymous customer, they experience the buying process online with an eye out for service that goes above and beyond. Looking at several factors including FAQ pages, means of contacting the business, and how quickly questions get answered, STELLA scores a business on their ability to provide to the customer.

Shelving, Inc. is dedicated a simple idea: doing more with less. We implement this idea whether it’s for your space or your budget, our goal is to provide you with the resources that will outperform and outlast with less cost and less hassle. We strive to continuously improve our products and our services in keeping with that ideal: do more with less. As of August, 2011, we are proud to announce the addition of stainless steel wire shelving to our storage repertoire, meaning that you can hold even more with a lot less. Stainless steel racks are rated to hold more weight, are more durable, can be used in more environments, and requires less maintenance. You can use for stocking inventory that is big, bulky, and weighs a bunch. Because these metal racks are durable, they last longer than the average stockroom shelf, extending the life of your storage capacity by years on end. Additionally, stainless steel shelves are versatile enough to stand in walk-in freezers, climate controlled rooms, or even out in the rain! Our hope in bringing on this strong and reliable product is to better serve our customers’ needs. We aim to provide more quality with less run around. If we can become your one stop storage shop to supply you with everything you need for your commercial or industrial storage project, then we know we’re doing our job. If there’s anything you’d like to see us carry, let us know.

Shelving, Inc. has brought on some new members to the crew in order to help us reach our ultimate goal: to make the process organizing your storage easier. On our end, that means making the purchase process easier for our customers. Without customers, we would just be a big warehouse with a lot of shelves. They are the reason we are able to put food on our tables (which are cleverly made of Chrome Wire Shelves with Liners) and they give purpose to our work. It is for you, dear customer, we have brought on a new generation of crew members to facilitate the online shopping experience. Shopping online seems to make a lot of people nervous. Well, our new Online Shopping: Consulting Division (a title QVC wishes they thought of) is here to put those worries to rest. By shopping with us, you’ll never need to fear the Bait and Switch, the Lost Order, or the Horrible Customer Service monsters that haunt other e-tailers. Our new crew knows how to put those monsters to bed, in a polite and user-friendly way. They even wrote up instructions, which they call a “business plan.” First order of business: make the site user friendly! You may notice some small changes around the site, but the idea is to modernize it and make it uniform throughout. Most notable is our update to the “Commercial and Industrial Storage and Shelving” tab on the navigation menu. We would link you to it, but it’s not there anymore. Reason being: it wasn’t friendly enough to be used, so we went ahead and got rid of it. Now, we have a convenient tab for Material Handling Equipment, which is great for anyone who owns or operates a warehouse (or other storage facility). Rolling ladders to reach stacked inventory, pallet jacks to cart inventory around, solid steel utility carts for quick and easy transport, and even a really neat tool for buckets (but you’ll see more about that another time). Keep an eye on us for new changes and constant updates as our new crew starts making the site easier to use. The result? Your business will be easier to operate. Just look how happy that puppy is when things are user-friendly.
