At Shelving, Inc. we value education and the importance of giving our youth the tools they need to create a better future for all. We know it’s not always easy to get to (and stay in) college and that financial hardships are one of the top reasons why students are unable to get the education they deserve.

Earlier this summer, we launched our fourth scholarship for college students currently pursuing a major in business and/or currently enrolled in a business-related field of study. Out of almost 300 applicants, we picked three winners, for prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500.

In their essays, we asked what inspired them to take this course of study. Here are their stories:

Shelving scholarship winner Brontae 2018

Brontae Williamson

Growing up in a single-parent household, Brontae learned from a young age that it takes hard work to accomplish your dreams. Seeing the perseverance of her mother, she strived to earn a degree that gave her the opportunity to develop herself as an entrepreneur, while doing something that inspires difference in the world. Now pursuing Industrial Design at the College for Creative Studies, with concentrations in ‘Business’ and ‘Sustainability and Social Responsibility,’ she hopes to become a successful role model as a young business woman and promote a shift in the industry’s focus to more eco-friendly and human-centered design.

Shelving scholarship winner Calvin 2018

Calvin Calloway

After landing an internship at Plante & Moran, Calvin was truly motivated by the knowledgeable and compassionate associates around him. They not only cared about their clients but also built up the skills of their employees in order to reach their full potential. This experience confirmed his decision to major in accounting—using what he’s fortunate enough to learn in college, he strives to inform members of his community in Detroit about different financial topics and help them make smart financial decisions. As part of the National Association of Black Accountants, he does his best to embody their motto: “Lift as we climb.”

Shelving 2018 Scholarship winner Olu

Oluwafunmilola Akinyemi

From a young age, Oluwafunmilola remembers watching television commercials, fascinated by the companies’ fierce and innovative competition. Curious about what made certain marketing campaigns successful, she decided to study Mass Communication. During a creative internship at an advertising agency, she competed against other young creatives in the Lagos Advertising & Ideas Festival (LAIF) competition and received third place. Now, her dream has shifted—with a desire to be part of the whole process, she’s traveling abroad and pursuing an MBA from the University of North Texas. Oluwafunmilola aspires to be a true female business leader, using the skills acquired to play a major role in the success story of a business.

Shelving, Inc. is so happy to help these deserving candidates meet their dreams by sponsoring their continuing education. Best of luck in the coming years Brontae, Calvin, and Oluwafunmilola!
